Course Description:

ABE Level 2

Covers reading, writing and communication skills. Concentrates on reading comprehension, main idea, and vocabulary development. Focuses on writing linked sentences.

ABE Level 3

Covers reading, writing and communication skills for review of basic grammar, punctuation and spelling. Concentrates on reading comprehension, main idea, vocabulary development, making inferences. Covers single paragraph writing.

ABE Level 4

Further development of skills in reading, vocabulary, grammar and multi-paragraph essays.

GED Level 5

Prepares learners to improve their general reading, writing and Math skills.

ABE Level 6

Preparation needed skills to enter a college program. Emphasizes effectively essay writing, reading college texts, and adapting to college culture.

Course Content:

Required text and materials: There are no required texts or materials for this class. The instructor will supply all handouts and laptops.

Attendance: We ask that you strive for 80% attendance

Grading:

Formal Grades

Y = Progress= progress same level

S= Satisfactory- passed current level

NC= No Credit-Did not take final. (Please remember there are no make-up dates for the written final.)

Student Rights and Responsibilities

To pass this class and be able to register for the next quarter, you must:

Attend class 80% of the time or more. Your teacher will tell you the number of classes you are allowed to miss.
Do the class work that is on your syllabus and assigned in class.
Take the CASAS tests. Our program receives money based on students taking CASAS tests. Test dates are on your syllabus and announced in class. If you miss the test, you will not be allowed to register for the next quarter.

Repeating a level

Your teacher will tell you if you need to take the level again, and what you need to be able to do to pass the level. If you do not pass a third time, you will not be able to register for the fourth time in that same level. Your teacher may request a meeting with the dean to discuss your progress.

Children are not permitted in Basic & Transitional Studies classes, and cannot be left alone in the halls. Please arrange for day care for your children while you are in class.
Basic & Transitional Studies students can only drop classes for the first two weeks of the quarter. After that, if you need to stop attending, inform your teacher, and come back to make an appointment for an Appeal with the Dean in order to return in a future quarter.

If you need course accommodations based on a documented disability, have any emergency medical information, or need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please tell your instructor what your needs are as soon as possible. Students are encouraged to contact the Disability Support Services Office (DSS) in Room 1112. Once the disability is verified with the DSS Office, you will be given a letter of accommodation that should be handed to your instructor.

DESC Class Expectations

When you sign up for a class, you are making a commitment to yourself. Class-time should be focused on that commitment. The following guidelines are to help minimized things that can distract you or your classmates from that commitment.

Cell Phone

Calls

No phone calls should be answered during class. The sound on your phone should be turned off. If you have an emergency that requires you receive a call, please set the phone to vibrate. If you need to answer the phone during class, please leave the room to do so. You may be asked to leave the classroom if you use your cellphone for personal reasons during class.

Texting

No sending or receiving texting during class. You will be asked to leave the classroom if you use your cellphone for personal reasons during class.

Breaks

There will a 10minute break during class at approximately 9:30am. If you need to step out of the classroom at another time, please do so without asking.

Eating

There is no eating in the classrooms. You are welcome to bring beverages.

Computers

The class has a set of Chromebooks that will be given out in this priority order: those who are working on building computer skills or doing other academics, those who are working on job applications, and finally, those who are using them to sort out personal issues (such as using Googlemaps to find a bus line, or to look up a phone number).Please do not use the Internet access for personal uses such as Facebook,

Late to class

If you are late to class, please enter the class quietly. If the class is working on an assignment and I am not busy, please get the assignment from me. You can make an appointment to discuss missed items if you’d like.
