Background

This week we will learn about mass incarceration. "Incarceration" refers to the process by which people are detained and put into the legal system, often being held in jails or prisons. The U.S.A has the highest incarceration rate in the world.

Objective

Reading:

- Interpret a poem by looking at the images it uses to communicate the message
- Express the perspective of the theme, freedom, from each viewpoint in the poem
- Relate the experience of the birds in the poem to the topic of mass incarceration

2) Watch a couple of videos about incarcerated men and women

3) Contribute to a discussion by interpreting artistic illustrations of a caged bird

4) Read a poem by Maya Angelou - "A Caged Bird" - and answer comprehension questions.
