Objective

Student will be able to identify verbs in each simple sentence. Verbs are action or linking words. 

Background

A verb is an action or linking word. An action word shows you the action or activity that happens in the sentence. A linking word connects the subejct of the sentence with a quality or characteristic. Consider the examples below. Each verb is underlined.

"The French chefs cook stinky broccoli."

"The broccoli is green"

"The chefs are French."

"The tall chef appears happy with her meal."

• The verb cook shows you the action that the chefs do in the kitchen.
• The verb is connects the two words "broccoli" and "green," telling you the color of the vegetable.
• The verb are connects the two words chefs and French, telling you the nationality of the people in the kitchen.
• The verb appears connects the two words chefs and happy, telling you their reaction to the meal they have served.
