Then:

install the Extension Pack For Java.
- be sure to get the one by Microsoft, Not the one by WalkMe
- The one you want has a coffee cup for an icon
CTRL+SHIFT+P
- type in: settings.json
- navigate to your JDK e.g. C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0_121
- double up the slashes: "java.home" : "C:\\Program Files\\Java\\jdk1.8.0_121"
Set up for JUnit testing
- go to: [CLICK HERE]
- "java.project.referencedLibraries": [ "lib/**/*.jar", "Your file's address goes here!" ] => "java.project.referencedLibraries": ["lib/**/*.jar", "C:\\Users\\kyrrah\\Downloads\\org_junit_platform_junit-platform-console-standalone_1.6.0_junit-platform-console-standalone-1.6.0.jar"],
- restart VS Code.

Then:

right click in folders on left of VS Code and create new file named Higher.java (be sure to capitalize the name)
type class and select the bottom choice that VS Code presents you with
inside the curly braces type: main and select the top choice
below the main method type:
- //this will take in 2 values and return the higher of the 2
  public static int higher(int x, int y) {
  if(x > y) {
  return x;
  }else {
  return y;
  }
  }
go back up to the main method and inside the curly braces type:
- int a = 25;
  int b = -25;
  int c = higher(a,b);
