EXAMPLES: Project 2

Below are examples of past student work for PROJECT #2: Portraits

  • Jennifer Huynh
I liked this image because it was eye-catching as I was scrolling through my photographs. With a combination of split lighting, the eye at an intersection of the rule of thirds and diagonal leading lines from the jacket, it brings attention to face and eyes. The photograph was taken in a slightly lit up room with a light source from the right and to create a darker photo, I set the ISO lower to 400. The aperture was 5.6 to create a slightly blurred background and a shutter speed of 1/10 to be able to capture the light source from the right. This subject (me) was just what I had to work with. This assignment was challenging in the fact that I had be both behind and in front of the camera.

This photo is my favorite I've taken yet. This photo also follows the rule of thirds. The subject is in focus behind a bright colorful background. I really like the exposure but I found it hard to get it.
    ISO/2000, Aperture f/5.6 and a Shutter Speed of 1/500s

ISO 100, f/8.0, 13.0

I took this photo with an extra-long exposure. I wanted to shoot a head-on portrait but in a more unique way. I used a mylar blanket I found in my basement as the backdrop, and I really enjoyed how much it reflected the light. I raised the exposure slightly in lightroom just to brighten it up a bit more. I'd like to try this setup out again in the future.

I chose to photograph my sister for this project.  I love the way this image turned out.  The colorful lighting was fun to play with during this assignment.  We took a lot of photos in all the different colors of light.  I played around with many different angles as well.  The lighting and angle of this image feel very dramatic to me.  My sister has always been good at being dramatic, especially during the moments you’d least expect, but it ends up being very funny.  I feel that this photo captured her dramatic side well.  We both had a lot of fun with this assignment!

I really like this photo because of the gray background that make the subject pop out more, most of the color in the photograph is black, gray, or white, so the skin color the photo and draw attention to the subject.

The purpose of this image is to represent a directional lighting portrait. I chose this subject because I find the portraits fascinating, and I figured I should try it. I'm amazed by the results. It really shows the lightning in the black and white theme. This photo was in a light color. I edited it in Lightroom and made it a black and white themed. I decided to make it a directional lighting portrait because of the lighting shining on my face. Also put black and whites, but mostly blacks for the background and shoulders.

For the results, it's tough taking photographs of yourself when no one is there to help you, but anything was possible. Also, trying to find the right lighting for the subject was hard. But throughout anything, I loved how my photos turned out. They represent some of the element techniques, but my edits mostly represented them. I would probably try to practice more on editing and taking portrait photos that include the composition elements.

  • Jacob Schamer

For this photo, I asked my friend Eva to come down to downtown and she always comes prepared. She had this shirt with her as well as the earrings which she suggested for a more dynamic portrait. I was so happy I asked her to model for me for this very reason. She is fantastic about colors and creativity (and she is a little cooky), so this portrait came out wonderful.

The only thing I would have changed here would be to find a different shirt (she is wearing a very short crop top) that could been better for a literal portrait orientation. Also the garbage cans in the background aren't very flattering, but the colors and detail easily make up for it.

Shutter Speed: 1/5

ISO: 299

Aperture: 1.7

Like most of us, I don't have any fancy lighting equipment, so I had to get creative with what I used for lighting. I spend a fair chunk of my life in front of a computer screen. So, I thought I would use it. The biggest challenge was finding a good angle and taking a lot of shots till I was satisfied. I wanted a personal feel to the photo.
