Brief
Purpose
The idea behind this assignment is to observe the environment around you, by searching for items on a scavenger hunt list, and create a series of dynamic and compelling photographic compositions.
By completing this assignment, you will be able to:
- Experiment with how shutter speed affects movement
- Experiment with how depth of field affects the mode and focal elements of a photograph
- Experiment with camera angles to create a dynamic composition
- Experiment with how pattern and contrast helps to create a dynamic composition
- Demonstrate an understanding of camera controls: ISO, aperture, shutter speed
As you create your compositions, keep the following in mind:
- Think about how close or far away you are to what you are photographing.
- Think about patterns when looking around you.
- Think about the type of places, people, and things that are important to you.
- Think about the things you see in everyday life.
- Think about the things you may overlook in everyday life.
Instructions
To complete the assignments, please follow all directions:
- Read/watch the the following lectures, to make sure you understand the basic elements of composition and camera controls.
- Take a look at past student work: EXAMPLES: Project 1

Create a series of 15 photographs, following this scavenger hunt prompt.
Include a photograph from each of the items on this list in your series:-
- An open door
- Negative space
- Monochromatic color
- Shallow depth of field
- Stopped action
- Motion blur
- Pattern and repetition
- Rule of thirds
- Eyes
- Light
- Texture
- Leading lines
- Reflection
- Something/Someone lost
- A loud noise

- Submit all 15 images online for the complete assignment.
- Only submit 15 separate image files
- Only submit the following file types: jpeg, jpg
- Label your files as "firstname_lastname_itemdescription" (ex. "jessica_hoffman_ghost")
- In the comments sections of the assignment, record your exposure settings

- CRITIQUE: Creating a Composition
Present to the class for critique your 3 strongest compositions in the discussion board.
*This is required and you must post your photographs in the discussion critique when you submit your assignment here.
Grading Criteria
Grading Requirements
The Projects Grading Rubric will be used to assign points for this assignment for a total of 50 possible points.
- Series of 15 photographs: 2 points for each photograph, for a possible total of 30
- Idea/Content: possible total of 5
- Technical application: possible total of 5
- Compositional elements: possible total of 5
- Properly submitted files and exposure information: possible total of 5
Overall, your assignment must meet the requirements stated above in a manner that is clear, concise, and proves you understand the content and assignment.
