In this assignment, you will practice portrait photography. You will apply previously learned basic elements of compositional theory and lighting skills to create 6 dynamic and compelling portrait photographs.

All 6 portrait photographs must be of people.

Purpose

By completing this assignment, you will be able to...

Experiment with camera angles to create a flattering portrait
Experiment with how lighting helps to create a flattering portrait
Experiment with how backdrops and props show off the personality of the subject
Produce a compelling composition

Instructions

To complete the assignments, please follow all directions:

1. Read/watch the the following lectures, to make sure you understand how to properly light and compose portraits.
2. Take a look at past student work: EXAMPLES: Project 2
3. Create a series of SIX (6) portrait photographs of people, focusing on the basics elements of compositions
  - Experiment with the following:
    - lighting
    - camera angles
    - backdrops
    - can be the same subject for all 6 images or different subjects
    - If you are interested in self portrait photography, please see RESOURCE: Self Portrait Photography for tips
4. Submit all 6 images online for the complete assignment.
  - Only submit 6 separate image files
    Please refer to this Canvas guide for uploading and submitting images in Canvas assignments: How to upload a file as an assignment in Canvas Links to an external site.
    I will not accept images submitted to me via email or as a single document attached in the comments section.
  - Only submit the following file types: jpeg, jpg
    If your files are RAW file formats, please save them in Adobe Lightroom or Photoshop Camera RAW as jpegs. The following demos provide detailed information on saving RAW files as jpegs in those programs:

  - Label your files as "firstname_lastname_imagenumber" (ex. "jessica_hoffman_1")
5. Record exposure and/or information in the comments section.
6. Post in the CRITIQUE: Portraits
  Present to the class for critique your TWO (2) strongest compositions in the discussion board.
  *This is required and you must post your photographs in the discussion critique when you submit your assignment here.

Grading Criteria

Grading Requirements

The Projects Grading Rubric will be used to assign points for this assignment for a total of 50 possible points.

Series of 6 photographs: 5 points for each photograph, for a possible total of 30
Idea/Content: possible total of 5
Technical application: possible total of 5
Compositional elements: possible total of 5
Properly submitted files and exposure information: possible total of 5

Overall, your assignment must meet the requirements stated above in a manner that is clear, concise, and proves you understand the content and assignment.
